Grasp the incidence and prevalence of ARDS and why these numbers are hard to estimate. 4. Define ARDS using the Berlin criteria. 5. Master different ventilator strategies used to treat ARDS. 6. Apply the principles of lung protective ventilation to patients with ARDS. 7. Set an appropriate level of PEEP in patients on mechanical ventilation. 8. Describe the controversies in treatment of ARDS. 9. Recognize when it may be appropriate to refer a patient for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). 10. Plan to treat these patients in the hospital and after discharge.
