In this presentation, Chelsea Huang will provide an overview of allergic reactions to beta-lactam’s with a focus on penicillin allergy, including clinical implications of penicillin allergy label and updates on risks of cross-reactivity between penicillin and other beta-lactams. -Lactams which include penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems, and monobactams, are the most common antibiotic classes reported to cause allergic reactions to drugs. Learning Objectives: Explain the clinical implications associated with patients labeled with penicillin allergy. Summarize the mechanisms and associated risks of allergic cross-reactivity between beta lactams. Apply risk stratification to help determine appropriate method(s) for confirming or delabeling penicillin allergy. Select optimal antibiotic(s) for treatment or prophylaxis of infections in patients labeled with penicillin allergy.
