This course is an overview on the latest research and findings concerning the human microbiome, conservatively estimated at 10 trillion and counting bacteria. These findings tell us about illness and health, including critical illness and how we can restore health as well as saving lives in the ICU setting, with an emphasis on practical knowledge as well as translational research. Knowledge of this microbiome in the context of both normal and altered physiology can be used to make meaningful management decisions which have the potential to enhance critical care outcomes.
