Controlled substances are prescribed and dispensed today at an increasing rate tohelp patients cope with pain, insomnia, anxiety, depression, ADHD, and a myriad ofother disorders. Studies show that most practitioners are rather conservative whenprescribing controlled drugs while a small number are at times overly aggressive. Inaddition, controlled prescription medications are falling into the hands of increasingnumbers of prescription drug abusers. How can the practitioner more eff ectively understand the pharmacologic profi les forcontrolled drugs, identify diagnostic criteria for appropriate prescribing, and consider thetherapeutic implications of specifi c substance use by individual patients?
