ED Collaborative Care: NPs and Physicians (LA)

ED Collaborative Care: NPs and Physicians (LA)

As more nurse practitioners (NPs) take positions in emergency departments (EDs), the number of professional liability claims against them is going up, too. The increase in lawsuits isn t happening because NPs don t provide good care; instead, it s a function of growing emergency NP deployment. In other words, the percentage of claims naming NPs remains fairly constant as the number of emergency NPs climbs. Many ED-related claims involve issues connected with collaborative processes between NPs and emergency physicians. This activity will examine communication and consultation between NPs and physicians. It will discuss ways these ED clinicians can cooperate to heighten patient safety and reduce their liability risks.
