This bundle of four CME sessions from the 2022 KCU Homecoming consists of four sessions on Medical Equity and Ethics. Below are the titles and learning objectives for each session. Health Equity: Caring for Immigrant & Non-English-Speaking Populations Learning Objectives: – Define key terms related to immigration and health (eg. immigrant, refugee, asylee, undocumented). – Explain the ways in which immigration status influences health, and describe common challenges faced by immigrants in receiving optimal health care. – Explain how to take a patient-centered approach to caring for immigrant populations. – Describe best practices and common pitfalls related to conducting a medical visit with an interpreter. Health Equity: Caring for Patients with Opioid Use Disorder Learning Objectives – Describe the epidemiology of opioid use disorders and opioid-related mortality, focusing on how increased heroin use and fentanyl in the drug supply have changed the dynamics of the epidemic. – Define opioid use disorder and explain how to diagnose opioid use disorder. – Describe options for treatment of opioid use disorders, including detox, behavioral therapies, and medications for opioid use disorders (buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone), and discuss the evidence for the effectiveness of these interventions. – Understand the mechanism of action of buprenorphine, and describe key principles of managing opioid use disorder with buprenorphine – Describe how harm reduction principles can be applied to treating opioid use disorders, including naloxone prescribing and access to syringe services programs. – Describe the impact of stigma on people with opioid use disorders, and discuss ways to reduce stigma related to opioid use disorders in clinical practice. LGBTQ+ Medical Case Scenarios: An Experiential Learning Perspective Learning Objectives – Describe how to set the stage for a patient or colleague to come out to them. – List issues LGBTQ people are at higher risk for. – Discuss the difference between gender identity and sexual orientation. Professionalism in Healthcare Learning Objectives – What is a profession? – Professional Relationship with Patients – Professional relationship with Peers
