Target Audience Prescribers licensed to treat humans and who have a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) number and medical residents prescribing under a facility DEA number. Program Overview As part of ongoing efforts to address the epidemic of opioid overdose deaths, New York State has established educational requirements in Public Health Law Article 33 3309-a to raise healthcare provider awareness of the risks associated with prescribing and taking opioid pain medications. This program fulfills the mandate by providing education about state and federal requirements for prescribing controlled substances; pain management; appropriate prescribing; managing acute pain; palliative medicine; prevention, screening and signs of addiction; responses to abuse and addiction; and end of life care. Additionally, this activity fulfills four out of eight hours of the Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act requirement for all DEA-registered practitioners to complete training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.
