Learning Objectives: Learners will review unique aspects of diabetes mellitus in older adults. Learners will discuss evidence-based glucose and A1c goal setting in this population. Learners will review best practices in treating older adults with diabetes. Learners will discuss ADA guidelines as it applies to older adults with diabetes. Learners will utilize cases to apply learnings from this session. Learners will assess and develop an awareness of the high prevalence of diabetes among the elderly population. Learners will analyze and apply the current recommendations for glycemic control in elderly adults with diabetes. Learners will implement changes to their practice based on the efficacy and safety information regarding non-insulin therapies for older adults with type 2 diabetes. Learners will improve patient outcomes through appropriate use of medications specifically understanding the unique impact on the elderly population. Learners will assess and control glucose levels in their patients to prevent hospitalizations for issues such as heart disease, heart failure, wounds, and hypoglycemia.
