Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a rare neuromuscular disorder, leads to progressive muscle weakness, atrophy, and paralysis. Due to its rarity, awareness of SMA is low. This is particularly true regarding SMA in adults as until recently, treatment was supportive and most patients did not survive beyond adolescence. Although therapeutic advancements have extended the lifespan of many patients well into adulthood, adolescents and adults with SMA have significant care needs that remain unrecognized and unaddressed. Among the top challenges is the transition from pediatric to adult care services. In this video, hear experts discuss key findings and real-world clinical practice changes stemming from a quality improvement program in SMA designed to bridge gaps in the transitions of care (ToC) process. Expert faculty will present the latest clinical evidence in SMA treatment and management, focusing on the unique needs of adolescents and adults with SMA, and providing insights on coordinating care across specialty teams. Additionally, a downloadable point-of-care PDF tool will be available for quick reference on evidence-based ToC practices and resources.
