Delirium

Delirium

A sudden and fluctuating attention, cognition, and awareness disturbance characterizes delirium. It is prevalent, affecting 11% to 25% of older adults in inpatient settings, and imposes a considerable financial burden. Independent risk factors include advanced age, multiple comorbidities, recent surgery, and polypharmacy. While the diagnosis is primarily clinical, it can be challenging due to overlapping symptoms with dementia and depression.
