PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The risk of recurrence in thyroid cancer is quite low, however it depends on the extent of initial diseases, both at the primary site and nodal metastasis. Recurrent disease is difficult to manage in relation to resection of tumor, prevention of complication, and future recurrences. The major areas of distant metastases are lungs, bones, and brain. The role of adjuvant therapy needs to be elaborated in patients presenting with recurrent thyroid cancer. This session will discuss the etiology of recurrences and the best surgical management. It will also discuss the nuances in evaluation and management of recurrent thyroid cancer.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Discuss the risk groups and prognostic factors in relation to recurrent thyroid cancerOUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Review the management of locally advanced recurrent thyroid cancer and nodal metastasesOUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Discuss the diagnostic evaluation and surgical management of recurrent thyroid cancerBACKGROUND STATEMENT: Management of recurrent thyroid cancer is complex and a difficult surgical issue. The etiological factors include initial advanced disease, incomplete surgery, or progression of residual disease. This course will discuss evaluation and management.
