How to Manage Pediatric Complications to Make Your Life Simpler (AMW2023)

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Every otolaryngologist faces complication in their practice. In medicine, complication is defined as an unanticipated problem that arises following, and is a result of, a procedure, treatment, or illness. Some of them are life-threatening and require immediate attention, but most of the time, these complications predominantly affect the quality of life and the quality of care. They can cause headaches to the clinician given the nature of the problem, and sometimes no clear answer exists regarding their management. The panel will focus specifically on the pediatric population and cover best practice and evidenced-based information on the prevention, recognition, and management of complications affecting ear, nose, throat and head and neck area. We will address medical, surgical, and disease-associated complications that are most encountered in a pediatric and general otolaryngology practice, from chronic otorrhea after tympanostomy tubes to complications from acute sinusitis such as paranasal subperiosteal abscess. We will also cover what appears to be simple complications with no consensus on how to manage them. Such complications will include medial migration of tympanostomy tubes and how to decide to remove or not remove; occluded tympanostomy tubes, and other common complications such as postoperative pain and bleeding. The panel will share their tips and pearls on how to make your busy practice easier when encountering unwanted outcomes. We will also touch on how to manage your own emotional and professional reactions to poor outcomes, how to handle difficult situation such as angry parents and when to refer to a colleague or suggest a second opinion.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Recognize the most common complications encountered in a pediatric settingOUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Understand the controversial and contradictory literature (or lack thereof) currently available on some of these complicationsOUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Participate in shared decision making with families about the management of these problemsBACKGROUND STATEMENT: Urgent need for a review of current literature and trends, to help clinicians counsel parents and caregivers regarding the prevention and management of pediatric otolaryngology complications.
