Chronic Ear Surgery: Surgical Techniques and Avoidance of Complications (AMW2023)

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This program will discuss chronic ear surgery. The surgical treatment of patients with chronic ear disease requires knowledge of various surgical techniques that can be modified to match specific patient pathology. A well-prepared surgeon will utilize atticotomy, intact canal wall or canal wall down procedures in combination with lateral graft, medial graft or hybrid tympanic membrane grafting techniques. Graft material utilized can carry certain advantages and disadvantages as can transcanal endoscopic or microscopic techniques. Surgeons prepared to use a breadth of surgical techniques will be better able to tailor treatment to the needs of the patient.In addition, avoidance of complications in chronic ear surgery involves appropriate preoperative assessment and patient selection, an in-depth understanding of anatomy, capable surgical technique and consideration of utilizing facial nerve monitoring.This program will demonstrate through video case series presentations key relevant surgical techniques that can be employed to safely and successfully perform chronic ear surgery.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Identify surgical indications for appropriate patient selection in chronic ear surgery.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Understand the breadth of otologic surgical techniques available.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Understand key steps in avoiding complications in chronic ear surgery.BACKGROUND STATEMENT: This program will assist Otolaryngologists in surgical decision making in chronic ear surgery with discussion of techniques, materials, and approaches as well as ways to avoid complications. Video case presentations will be used.
