Caring for Marginalized Populations: Practical Tips and Pearls (AMW2023)

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This case-based panel presentation and interactive audience discussion will address common challenges faced by general otolaryngologists, head and neck surgeons, and reconstructive surgeons when treating patients from marginalized communities, including patients in remote geographic locations, economically disenfranchised populations, and uninsured, undocumented and non-english-speaking patients. The focus will be on practical and research-based interventions, including practical ways to incorporate techniques into practice and effective application to various practice models.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Be able to identify pragmatic ways to optimize care for patients who live in underserved geographic areas, including safe application of remote care technologies; engagement with local providers; practical solutions for housing during treatment; and consideration of modified care plans.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Become familiar with practical evidence-based interventions to improve care quality in patients from under-resourced communities facing problems such as food and housing insecurity, malnutrition, transportation challenges, lack of insurance, and lack of access to equipment and service.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Be able to recognize the challenges of treating patient populations marginalized by language, immigration status and undocumented status, and describe practical ways to provide effective care and optimize treatment outcomes in this patient population.BACKGROUND STATEMENT: It is important that providers understand barriers to equitable health care faced by marginalized populations in order to improve equity and justice in the health system.
