10 Years of Endoscopic Cholesteatoma Surgery: Our Successes and Failures (2023 AMW)

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Endoscopic Cholesteatoma Surgery has gained increasing acceptance for its minimally invasive transcanal approach, its intent to eradicate the disease while preserving the mastoid and its role in restoring a more physiological middle ear ventilation system. This course is intended as a comprehensive summary of two surgeons reviewing their ten years experience in endoscopic cholesteatoma surgery and critically analyzing their long-term clinical achievements as well as their limitations, complications, and clinical failures.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: To illustrate the indications and contraindications for endoscopic approaches for cholesteatoma through clinical cases, pre-operative radiologic imaging, preoperative and postoperative photographs, and hearing outcomes.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: To discuss successful outcomes of endoscopic surgical approaches for cholesteatoma highlighting anatomical considerations, surgical decisions and techniques that allowed for a successful result.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: To review failures in achieving a good outcome and to analyze the reasons for suboptimal results, ranging from technical errors in surgical technique to misjudgment in the pre-operative planning process.BACKGROUND STATEMENT: As endoscopic ear surgery is reaching a 10-year milestone anniversary, there is a need for more advanced didactic material beyond the basics on how to get started. The audience prefers courses based on clinical case scenarios and debate like-format on critical discussion of surgical cases.
