Familial Hypertriglyceridemia

Familial Hypertriglyceridemia

Familial hypertriglyceridemia (FHTG), also known as type IV familial dyslipidemia, is a genetic disorder characterized by elevated blood triglyceride levels. This elevation is primarily due to increased production and decreased clearance of very low-density lipoprotein particles. Clinically, FHTG manifests as moderate-to-severe hypertriglyceridemia, often accompanied by comorbidities such as obesity, hyperglycemia, and hypertension. These factors increase the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD)and, in severe cases, can lead to acute pancreatitis. Early identification and intervention are crucial, as individuals with FHTG may be asymptomatic until severe complications arise.Recognizing clinical signs such as xanthomas, hepatomegaly, and lipemia retinalis, along with obtaining a thorough family medical history, aids in timely diagnosis. Effective management requires a multifaceted approach, integrating lifestyle modifications and pharmacological therapies to reduce triglyceride levels and mitigate the risk of acute pancreatitis and ASCVD. This activity explores the etiology, epidemiology, pathophysiology, and management of FHTG while highlighting the role of the interprofessional healthcare team in improving patient outcomes through personalized treatment plans and patient education. This activity aims to provide healthcare professionals with a comprehensive overview of FHTG, including diagnosing the condition, identifying and differentiating secondary causes of elevated triglycerides, and prescribing effective treatment. In addition, this activity also provides clinicians with a thorough understanding of FHTG, from its genetic basis to clinical management, which can improve patient outcomes by reducing the incidence of severe complications and enhancing the quality of life for individuals affected by this genetic lipid disorder.
