Chondrodermatitis nodularis chronica helicis, also known as chondrodermatitis nodularis helicis, is a benign inflammatory condition that affects the skin and cartilage of the pinna. CNH commonly affects the helix of the auricle, although in some cases, the antihelix may be involved. The lesion most often appears as a 4 mm to 6 mm tender, raised nodule with a central crust, but it may also be flat. Men are affected four times as often as women, and most series indicate a predisposition for the right ear to be affected. Fair-skinned individuals are more susceptible than darker-skinned individuals, and the condition is more common in middle age and later, although it has been reported in younger adults. The exact etiopathogenesis of CNH remains unclear, but chronic pressure from lateral decubitus sleeping, telephone use, and the wearing of hearing aids or earphones appears to play a role. Sun damage and cold weather may also exacerbate the condition. This activity reviews the evaluation and management of chondrodermatitis nodularis chronica helicis and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in the care of affected patients.
