White matter lesions, visualized as hyperintensities on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, signify abnormal myelination in the brain and serve as markers for small vessel disease. They are considered a marker of small vessel disease. However, there are numerous non-vascular causes, as well. An increase in white matter lesions increases the risk of stroke, cognitive decline, depression, disability, and mortality in the general population.Participants thoroughly examine white matter lesion pathophysiology, encompassing vascular and non-vascular contributors. The course offers detailed reviews of MRI imaging modalities, including T2 weighted and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery sequences that elucidate diagnostic nuances. Treatment strategies tailored to the underlying etiology are examined, aiming to mitigate associated risks such as stroke, cognitive decline, and depression. Engagement in this course fosters collaboration among healthcare professionals, emphasizing the crucial role of the interprofessional team in evaluating and managing patients with white matter lesions. By drawing on diverse expertise, including neurologists, radiologists, and primary care providers, clinicians can effectively navigate the complexities of diagnosis and treatment, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes and quality of life.
