Vertebral Augmentation

Vertebral Augmentation

Vertebral augmentation is a medical intervention designed to address vertebral compression fractures, a common complication of osteoporosis. The 2 primary procedures involved are vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty, both involving cement injection into the fractured vertebra to restore height, correct kyphosis, and alleviate pain. Vertebroplasty entails direct injection, while kyphoplasty involves the preliminary inflation of a balloon to create a cavity for cement injection. These procedures aim to enhance patient mobility, reduce pain, and mitigate the risk of complications associated with vertebral fractures, such as adjacent fractures and increased mortality.Participants will gain comprehensive knowledge of vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty techniques, including indications, contraindications, procedural steps, and potential complications. Participation in this course enhances the competence of interprofessional teams by fostering collaboration and mutual understanding of each member’s role in vertebral augmentation procedures. Physicians, radiologists, nurses, and technologists learn to work synergistically, ensuring seamless patient care from diagnosis to post-procedure follow-up. By sharing expertise and insights, the team optimizes patient outcomes and minimizes the risk of complications associated with vertebral fractures.
