Transhiatal esophagectomy is an alternative to the three incisions Ivor Lewis esophagectomy, which aims to provide decreased morbidity and improve clinical outcomes by a lower pulmonary complication risk. The procedure is performed with an abdominal and a cervical incision and allows mobilization of the stomach as a conduit to the cervical esophagus. This activity reviews the transhiatal esophagectomy procedure and explains the role of the interprofessional team in managing patients who undergo a transhiatal esophagectomy.
