Radiation Proctitis

Radiation Proctitis

Radiation proctitis refers to injury or damage to the rectum secondary to radiation therapy. It is postulated that almost half of all patients with pelvic malignancies undergo treatment that involves radiation. The increasing incidence is closely tied to advancements in cancer treatment. Clinicians will increasingly encounter cases of radiation proctitis due to improved overall survival in cancers such as cervical, prostate, and rectal malignancies. It is essential to understand the distinction between acute and chronic radiation proctitis, with a particular focus on chronic cases occurring more than 3 months after initial radiation treatment. This activity reviews the evaluation and treatment of radiation proctitis. This activity also highlights the crucial role of the interprofessional team in managing affected patients, providing clinicians with valuable insights and strategies for collaborative patient care.Clinicians can expect to gain a comprehensive understanding of the evaluation and management of radiation proctitis. From diagnostics to collaborative interventions, participants will unravel the nuances of acute and chronic forms of radiation proctitis and gain invaluable insights into optimizing patient outcomes in this increasingly prevalent condition.
