Melanoma is a malignancy derived from the malignant transformation of melanocytes. Melanocytes are derived from the neural crest. Therefore, melanomas, although they arise from the skin, can develop in other locations where neural crest cells migrate, such as the gastrointestinal tract and brain. The 5-year relative survival rate for patients with stage 0 melanoma or melanoma-in-situ is 97%, compared to 30% for those with stage IV disease. Once a suspicious skin lesion is identified, a biopsy must be performed to confirm the diagnosis of melanoma. An excisional biopsy is the preferred biopsy modality. Melanoma treatment typically involves wide local excision, Mohs micrographic surgery, digital amputations, or adjuvant therapy depending on tumor location, depth, ulceration, lymph node involvement, and metastasis. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence when managing malignant melanoma, equipping them with updated knowledge, skills, and strategies for timely identification, effective interventions, prevention, and improved care coordination, leading to better patient outcomes.
