Enchondromas are benign hyaline cartilage tumors of unknown etiology occurring in bones of endochondral origin. These lesions account for approximately 3% of bone neoplasms and up to 13% of benign bone growths. Enchondromas are usually solitary, central, metaphyseal tubular bone lesions, favoring the small hand and foot bones, femur, and humerus.Enchondromatous tumor growth typically begins in childhood, arising from growth plate cartilage or chondrocytes that initially proliferate but fail to develop normally and persist until adulthood. The symptoms are often nonspecific, including pain, swelling, and deformity. Asymptomatic lesions typically do not require treatment. However, pathologic fractures are common. Symptomatic enchondroma lesions are managed surgically, usually by simple curettage with bone grafting. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learners’ competence in evaluating and managing enchondromas. Valuable knowledge will be gained to enhance the learners’ ability to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team caring for patients with this condition.
