Congenital lobar emphysema (CLE) is a rare developmental lung anomaly characterized by the excessive inflation of one or more lung lobes without destroying the alveoli. This condition, also known as congenital lobar overinflation, primarily results from defective bronchial cartilage. CLE typically presents with respiratory distress in newborns or young children, although some cases may remain undetected until adulthood. The “ball valve” effect, causing bronchial blockage, leads to air trapping during expiration and recurrent respiratory distress. Diagnosis is usually made through imaging studies, with histopathology revealing overexpansion of lung lobes and compression of adjacent lung tissue, impairing ventilation, and perfusion. Management depends on the severity of symptoms, ranging from conservative approaches for mild cases to lobectomy for severe cases. Early diagnosis and appropriate intervention are crucial to prevent complications and ensure better respiratory function for affected individuals.Participants in this course gain comprehensive knowledge of CLE, including its pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic techniques, and management strategies. They learn the importance of early identification and intervention to optimize respiratory function and prevent complications. The course emphasizes the role of interprofessional collaboration among pulmonologists, radiologists, pediatricians, and surgeons in providing holistic care for patients with CLE. This team-based approach enhances patient outcomes by ensuring accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, and coordinated long-term management, addressing the immediate and future health needs of patients with this rare lung anomaly.
