Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), also referred to as post-infectious encephalomyelitis, is an acute, rapidly progressive autoimmune process. This condition is characterized by demyelination in the brain and spinal cord as a result of inflammation that occurs in response to a preceding infection or immunization. This activity reviews the typical clinical features of ADEM and discusses the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in this condition. The epidemiology and etiologies are presented, as well as the important differential diagnoses, especially other brain parenchymal inflammatory disorders. The article stresses the importance of clinical, radiological, and laboratory evaluation and management of ADEM; finally, it highlights the role of the interprofessional team in caring for patients with this condition.
