Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common psychiatric disorder that can result after an individual experiences a traumatic event. PTSD has a broad clinical presentation but is characterized by symptoms impairing cognition, mood, somatic experience, and behavior. PTSD in the pediatric population has special considerations compared to the adult population. PTSD in children may present clinically differently compared to the adult presentation; therefore, the evaluation is different. Further, there are specific criteria for evaluating children 6 years of age and younger, distinct from those older than 6. Medication approaches to PTSD are not as efficacious in pediatric PTSD; psychotherapy is encouraged as the first-line treatment in the setting of pediatric PTSD. PTSD can cause chronic impairments, lead to comorbid psychiatric illness, and lead to an increased risk of suicide. This course aims to provide healthcare professionals with a comprehensive understanding of PTSD in children, equipping them with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively identify, assess, and manage this complex mental health condition. Participants will learn the epidemiology, etiology, and risk factors associated with pediatric PTSD. The clinical manifestations and diagnostic criteria, including the unique developmental considerations in assessing PTSD in children, will be discussed. This activity will cover evidence-based approaches to the assessment and differential diagnosis of pediatric PTSD, highlighting the importance of an interprofessional team approach.
