Candidemia is a serious infection characterized by Candida spp in the bloodstream, diagnosed by positive blood cultures from a peripheral or central line. As the fourth most common healthcare-associated bloodstream infection in the United States and the leading fungal bloodstream infection globally, candidemia presents significant clinical challenges. The incidence of healthcare-associated candidemia has risen by over 50% in the last decade, with high morbidity and mortality rates attributed to factors such as indwelling catheters, patient frailty, immunosuppression, overuse of antibiotics, delayed diagnosis, and variability in antifungal susceptibility. The disease can cause invasive candidiasis, leading to complications such as deep-seated tissue infections and severe bloodstream infections, contributing to prolonged hospital stays and increased healthcare costs. This educational activity for healthcare professionals offers crucial knowledge on the epidemiology, diagnosis, and management of candidemia, emphasizing the importance of early recognition, knowledge of local and global epidemiology, and the appropriate treatment to improve patient outcomes. Healthcare professionals can better address the evolving epidemiology of Candida spp by learning to identify candidemia and manage antifungal therapy promptly. This activity also highlights the role of interprofessional collaboration, demonstrating how coordinated efforts among infectious disease specialists, microbiologists, pharmacists, and critical care teams can enhance the accuracy of diagnosis, streamline treatment, and ultimately improve patient care and survival rates.
