Anemia of chronic kidney disease (CKD), also known as anemia of chronic renal disease, is a type of normocytic normochromic anemia and hypoproliferative anemia. This condition is common in patients with renal disease and is associated with poor outcomes and increased mortality risk in CKD. Although it shares many similarities with the chronic inflammation aspects of anemia of CKD, a key distinction is the severe erythropoietin deficiency in anemia of CKD. Consequently, treatment focuses on improving renal function when possible, reducing functional iron deficiency, and increasing red blood cell production. Diagnosis requires a complete blood count with differential, peripheral smear, and tests to rule out other causes of anemia, including B12, folate, haptoglobin, thyroid studies, and iron indices (iron, ferritin, total iron-binding capacity, and transferrin saturation).Erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) and iron supplementation currently constitute the backbone of treatment for anemia of chronic renal disease. Guidelines have evolved significantly since the initial use of ESAs and intravenous iron formulations, and many new therapeutic interventions are currently available or being studied in advanced-phase clinical trials. This activity reviews the evaluation and management of anemia of chronic renal disease. This activity also highlights the role of the interprofessional healthcare team in caring for individuals affected by this condition to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
