Mechanical aortic valve replacement (MAVR) is a vital surgical intervention for patients with severe aortic valve disease, such as aortic stenosis or regurgitation, where the native valve’s function is compromised. The procedure involves the implantation of a mechanical prosthetic valve that mimics the function of the natural valve while offering superior durability compared to bioprosthetic valves. Mechanical valves, known for their longevity—often lasting over 20 years—are particularly beneficial for younger patients or those who can tolerate lifelong anticoagulation therapy, which is necessary to prevent thromboembolic complications. Despite the advantages, the need for continuous anticoagulation presents challenges, including an increased risk of bleeding, making careful patient selection and ongoing management critical.Participants in this course gain a thorough understanding of the comprehensive care required for patients undergoing MAVR, from preoperative evaluation and patient selection to the intricacies of surgical techniques and the management of anticoagulation therapy. The course emphasizes the importance of collaborating with an interprofessional team, which plays a crucial role in optimizing patient outcomes. Through coordinated care, including regular monitoring, patient education, and timely interventions, the interprofessional team ensures that patients receive the best possible care, thereby reducing the risk of complications and enhancing the overall success of the procedure.
