The goal of this program is to improve delineation of roles for administrators and clinicians during an emergency or crisis, diagnosis and management of metformin-related lactic acido-sis, and outcomes of patient transfers. After hearing about and assimilating this program, the clinician will be better able to:
1. Communicate effectively with hospital administrators during a crisis.
2. Discern whether contacting an administrator is necessary during challenging situations in the hospital.
3. Diagnose the cause of an extremely elevated lactate level.
4. Provide appropriate emergency treatment to a patient found unconscious with lactic acidosis.
5. Comply with Emergency Medicine Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) regulations for interhospital transfers of patients.
