Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) are Veteran-centered treatments for increasing motivation to change behavior(s) by resolving ambivalence about making behavior change in both psychotherapy and other psychosocial interventions. During psychotherapy, target behaviors could include discontinuing substance use/misuse, smoking cessation, adopting medication adherence, or engaging in an additional mental health treatment. During psychosocial interventions (for example provided by OT, Peer Support Specialist, Chaplains) examples of specific behaviors include executing a home exercise program, monitoring blood glucose or blood pressure, taking prescribed medications, or integrating into the community (e.g., joining a social group or going to the grocery store).Due to the strong research support for MI/MET in studies conducted both inside and outside the VA, the Evidence-Based Psychotherapy (EBP) Program has developed MI/MET training for healthcare teams working in health and mental health settings.
This presentation will introduce and review Brief Action Planning (BAP) and BAP-MI, tools and techniques which may enhance an MI mission in healthcare to support patient self-management and promote readiness/behavior change. Before and after this Program on June 13, 2023, interested participants will be offered several time-limited opportunities to view online, selfdirected courses on BAP and BAP-MI (at no charge) and participate in future development and integration efforts. This live virtual, knowledge-based training, planned for the interprofessional healthcare team, will demonstrate core competencies and provide interactive feedback for training participants. Learners will complete a program evaluation post-training.
