Enduring “See Me, Hear Me”: Black Maternal and Mental Health Care Among Women Veterans

Enduring “See Me, Hear Me”: Black Maternal and Mental Health Care Among Women Veterans

Women Veterans have unique mental health needs. These include differences in the prevalence and expression of mental health disorders and response to treatment, as well as different biological, social, and cultural influences. This will enhance care and help to eliminate disparities for this patient population. In this recorded, virtual, knowledge-based session, VA clinicians/interprofessional healthcare teams will learn how maternal and mental health care disparities occur in women with specific consideration to Black/African-American Veterans who are at high risk of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. We will explore how implicit and explicit biases along with overall disparities in healthcare, contribute to their maternal care in the VA and in the community. Special consideration will be given to understanding the unique ecological experiences of Black/African-American women. We will discuss evidence-based strategies that can be employed by mental health clinicians to reduce biases and disparities and improve their care across primary care and mental health settings.
