Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. Although there have been significant declines in cigarette use in the general and Veteran populations, the prevalence of smoking among persons with alcohol use disorder remains stubbornly high. The rates among those in substance use disorder treatment are even higher with rates ranging from 72%-83%. Despite these high rates and increased risks of mortality and morbidity, smoking cessation interventions are underutilized in substance use disorder treatment settings. This knowledge-based recorded presentation will review the barriers to and rationale for implementing smoking cessation interventions in these treatment settings. Further, research findings related to the effectiveness of smoking cessation interventions among persons with alcohol and/or substance use disorders will be highlighted. This training is relevant to interprofessional healthcare teams.
