On one occasion, a surgeon may make a technical error in the operating room but no claim of medical malpractice follows. On another occasion, a technically perfect surgery may be followed by a claim of medical malpractice. This activity explores patterns and predictors in the occurrence of claims. It provides an overview of current medical malpractice claims data for general surgeons and notes findings from several studies about the causes of general surgery claims.
