Advanced Psychotherapy Curriculum (APC): Overview of Seeking Safety and Finding Your Best Self: Two Models for Trauma and/or Addiction

This curriculum was designed to provide high yield psychotherapy training to Addiction Psychiatry Fellows. For background, addition psychiatry fellows have completed a 4 year psychiatry residency and have chosen to do an additional 1 year of fellowship training in addiction psychiatry. As residents, the fellows will have already been exposed to multiple psychotherapy frameworks. They will have also worked with “therapy patients” over their 4 years of clinical training with supervision by clinical experts. However, after just graduating from residency as training addiction specialists, the fellows will need to begin to apply the psychotherapy skills they have developed in residency to clinical work with challenging patients with substance use disorders (who very often have co-morbid psychiatric disorders). While addiction psychiatrists prescribe medications and offer “mediation management,” we recognize that in order to provide optimal clinical care, critical parts of patient care inevitably requires psychotherapy. While most MDs are not able to practice in a traditional psychotherapy framework (weekly 45-60min appointments), it is possible, and we would argue essential, that addiction psychiatrists are prepared to practice as both prescribers and psychotherapists. This curriculum was developed to provide an opportunity for the fellows to review basic principles and applicable skills. They will learn advanced techniques from clinical experts that can be readily applied to real work clinical situations in the absence of formal, intensive psychotherapy training.
