The Role of Spirituality in Recovery from Substance Use Disorders (SUD)

The Role of Spirituality in Recovery from Substance Use Disorders (SUD)

Currently, the opioid epidemic is a major public health problem, and Veterans are among the populations affected by this crisis. Access to evidence-based treatment for substance use disorders (SUDs), including but not limited to medication-assisted treatment, is critical to improve outcomes among these Veterans; however, knowledge of and adherence to the VHA Uniform Mental Health Services Handbook (1160.01) and SUD Handbook (1160.04) as well as the current VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guidelines pertaining to the management of SUD among clinical leaders and SUD program managers is not uniform across the VA system. Additionally, substance use is a significant risk factor linked to suicide and suicide attempts and treatment for SUD can have the dual benefit of reduce risk for suicide.

This knowledge-based, recorded training will provide participants, along with interprofessional healthcare teams, a comprehensive information of the historical understanding of spirituality in the care of SUDs. Participants will gain an understanding of spiritual care in inpatient and outpatient settings, and they will be able to discuss the role of Chaplains and appropriate referrals.
