Social media boundaries for healthcare workers

Social media boundaries for healthcare workers

In today’s day and age, we find ourselves living in the knowledge era where information has never been more readily available and accessible to patients and end consumers than ever before. Due to the global adoption of smart mobile phones interconnected by a number of social media networking sites including, but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin, patients are over-exposed to medical information/healthcare advice and are no longer as dependent upon their health care providers for medical and healthcare-related information as the generations of patients that preceded them. One recent study notes that “In the U.S., eight in 10 Internet users search for health information online, and 74% of these people use social media.” The main issue becomes how licensed physicians and HCP’s think about safeguarding patients and end consumers from biased or misguided information that could be detrimental to their health as a result of the absence of regulation around medical advice shared by users on many social networking sites.
While there is no denying the prevalence of social media is playing in patient healthcare awareness and decision-making, a large number of licensed physicians and healthcare providers(HCPs) remain weary and somewhat disenchanted about their role and relationship with social media in the world of delivering quality healthcare. “A survey of more than 4,000 physicians conducted by the social media site QuantiaMD found that more than 90% of physicians use some form of social media for personal activities, whereas only 65% use these sites for professional reasons.” Upon further investigation, many physicians cite that a large part of the fear and trepidation to interact with their future and current patients on these platforms stems from the blurred lines on how to actually maintain a personal and professional image and healthy boundaries with patients in a way that won’t increase their exposure to legal liabilities, privacy breaches, and violations that could prove to be detrimental to their professional reputations and careers.
