Telehealth covers various technology-enabled exchanges of health and care management information. Telemedicine is one aspect of telehealth that refers to the delivery of health care between patient and health care provider, typically through video conferencing. Telemedicine can increase access to care, increase follow-up care, and reduce healthcare costs. According to a 2018 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the number of telemedicine visits increased by 261% from 2015 to 2017. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the number of clinicians providing telemedicine visits has expanded exponentially. Older adults and people with disabilities accounted for a large majority of ambulatory clinical visits. Delivering telemedicine to these special populations presents some unique benefits and challenges that are experienced within the larger patient population. This module will focus on these special populations. This content was developed with a primary lens for the inclusion of older persons, those with mobility barriers, and transportation issues. Achieving health equity for these patient populations is one of the foci of the module.
