Prevention and Reduction of Maternal & Neonatal Morbidity

Prevention and Reduction of Maternal & Neonatal Morbidity

The Obstetrics department of a hospital provides a wide spectrum of care to pregnant and postpartum women. This course highlights the aspects of maternity care that carry high stakes for patient outcomes from both a quality and safety viewpoint and for risk of medical liability claims.

In this course, we cover triage of pregnant and postpartum women, reducing the rate of cesarean sections and improving the safety of cesarean births, and preventing maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. We present best practice methods for induction of labor and prevention of maternal complications, such as venous thromboembolism, infections, and fetal injuries like hypoxia. As always, the goal is improving patient care outcomes, reducing maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality, and subsequently reducing risk and liability. After completing this course, OB providers/team members should be able to: identify leading causes of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality; list the U.S. Department of HHS 5-year national targets/goals for reduction of maternal morbidity and mortality; implement evidence-based methods to reduce the rate of primary cesarean sections and improve the safety of cesarean births; and apply best practice methods for induction of labor and prevention of maternal complications, such as venous thromboembolism, infections, and fetal injuries like hypoxia.
