Aortic aneurysm may develop silently over many years, manifesting rarely but catastrophically as dissection or rupture with high mortality. Aortic dissection is hard to diagnose in time. It is not always included in the differential when a patient presents emergently with severe chest, back or abdominal pain. In the US, aortic aneurysms and dissections account for approximately 15,000 deaths occurring each year, sometimes diagnosed only after death. Many deaths presumed to be from myocardial infarction were actually due to thoracic aortic dissection. This activity will review the data from studies in the peer-reviewed literature and present recent professional guidelines and tools for improving the diagnosis of aortic dissection.
