Pivoting Your Medical Practice When Faced with Life Adversities (2022 AMW)

Life does not always go as planned. When we choose our practice format after leaving residency, each of us has a picture of what it is we hope to accomplish and how that format fits our goals, guided by mentors who have travelled the path we desire to attain. Some choose academics, some the military, some private practice, and some careers in research. However, sometimes we develop illnesses such as cancer, autoimmune disease, or neurologic problems that interfere with our ability to continue the same path. Sometimes, we have family members who develop illnesses that require our attention. Sometimes changes in healthcare laws and regulations require us to work differently. For some of us, the pandemic has made our job a health threat because of underlying health conditions. Family obligations, illnesses, spousal career changes, pandemics, and changes in healthcare laws and regulations, can cause any one of us to re-evaluate our chosen career paths and alter them to fit our current circumstances. The decision can be difficult, daunting, and anxiety provoking simultaneously. The purpose of this panel is to evaluate how one approaches the “curve balls” that life can throw. We will discuss systematic approaches to evaluating one’s current career needs, goals, and abilities as they relate to changes in circumstance while balancing this with both new and old long-term goals. Strategies for maintaining balance during the transition and for managing patient expectations will also be discussed. Considerations for when and why one would choose to transition from being an operative to a non-operative otolaryngologist will also be explored.
