The goal of this program is to improve the management and prevention of local anesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST) and obstructive breathing patterns in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). After hearing and assimilating this program, the clinician will be better able to:
1. Recognize the signs and symptoms of LAST.
2. Use proper administration techniques for providing peripheral nerve blockade to minimize the risk for LAST.
3. Select an appropriate treatment strategy for managing LAST.
4. Identify the risk factors for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in the PACU.
5. Determine whether surgery is an appropriate treatment option in patients with OSA.
