This web-based program is designed to develop VA staff knowledge and expertise in Health
Informatics by following the guidelines for a training program established by the American
Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). This course is one of a series of courses taught by
recognized experts in the area of Health Informatics, from the VA and from other major
healthcare organizations and academic institutions. Topics covered are part of the Health
Informatics Core Content as outlined by AMIA. Staff completion of the web course/educational
series needed by all clinicians will contribute to the development of VA’s Health Informatics
workforce and enhance organizational informatics literacy.
Currently, the VA informatics workforce grew organically as new systems were designed,
deployed, and utilized to deliver care, however, these health information systems are aging and
lag behind progress made outside the VA over the past several years. This educational series will
allow the users of VA systems access to current principles and practices necessary to improve
their performance in each field or profession, including psychologists, social workers, etc.
Patient outcomes will be improved by the intelligent use of health information technology that
promotes patient safety, efficiency, and timeliness of care.
The purpose of this knowledge-based training is to provide an introduction to the importance of effective Project Teams in successful Informatics Change Processes including assembling the right team and managing the team for optimum effectiveness. Examples from successful change processes will be used to illustrate principles presented.
