The goal of this program is to improve medical care and renal outcomes in diabetes and the use of lipid and antiplatelet therapies for providing cardiac protection in diabetes. After hearing and assimilating this program, the clinician will be better able to:
1. Select appropriate treatment strategies for managing type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
2. Refer to findings from various clinical trials and 2021 guidelines for treating patients with comorbid diabetes and heart disease.
3. Recognize the renal benefits of using sodium-glucose transport protein 2 inhibitors and glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists in diabetic patients with chronic kidney disease.
4. Assess risk for primary and secondary atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in patients with diabetes.
5. Determine whether the use of statins is appropriate and beneficial for a diabetic patient with ASCVD risk.
