The fastest growing segment of America’s population consists of those 85 and older. In 2010, there were 5.8 million people aged 85 or older. By 2050, it is projected that there will be 19 million people aged 85 or older. This is a lingering effect of the “baby boom” period from 1945 to 1960, but can also be attributed to a general increase in life expectancy. Unfortunately, with the increase in the number of older adults comes an increase in the incidence of elder abuse. Estimates vary, but it is widely believed that 4 million older Americans are victims of physical, psychological or other forms of abuse and neglect every year. For the purposes of reporting abuse, it is important for providers to understand what constitutes abuse in their state.
In this activity, we address risk and protective factors for the elderly. We cover the topics of recognition of elder abuse and reporting to authorities. We also present effective treatment options and review documentation of care. After completing this activity, practitioners/members of the healthcare team should be able to: compare the types of elder abuse that occur in the older population; utilize the screening necessary to detect and assess elder abuse; and assess the need for reporting the abuse to the authorities.
