The Focused Cardiac Ultrasound (FoCUS) – Part 2: Advanced Clinical Module is the second of a three-part series of advanced SonoSim FoCUS modules, and it explores the use of ultrasound to detect and assess valvular heart disease. Specifically, the ideal echocardiographic windows for detecting valvular heart disorders, the approach to both valvular-regurgitant and stenotic disorders, and the evaluation of specific valvular disorders affecting the aortic, mitral, pulmonic, and tricuspid valves are discussed. The course begins with an introduction to FoCUS, also referred to as point-of-care echocardiography, and its indications. A brief review is provided of cardiac anatomy and physiology. Then, echocardiographic technique, including transducer selection, machine settings, imaging conventions, and image acquisition, is detailed. The use of Doppler adjunct during FoCUS is also discussed. The course continues with step-by-step instructions on echocardiographic assessment of heart valves for evidence of regurgitation and valvular stenosis.
