Respiratory Muscle Strength Training

Respiratory Muscle Strength Training

Respiratory muscle strength training (RMST) comprises exercises and techniques designed to enhance the strength and endurance of the respiratory muscles, such as the diaphragm and intercostal muscles. Various clinical disorders directly and indirectly affect the respiratory system, causing dysfunctional inspiration, expiration, or a combination thereof. RMST is especially beneficial for athletes. However, RMST is an effective treatment or rehabilitation tool for patients with respiratory conditions that negatively affect respiratory muscles, such as critical illness, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, or respiratory muscle weakness. RMST may be a standalone treatment or paired with other forms of pulmonary rehabilitation to remedy respiratory dysfunction and improve clinical outcomes. This activity reviews the essential components of an RMST program, explains the physiological basis of respiratory muscle strengthening, and discusses the clinical benefits of RMST across various clinical conditions. Additionally, it equips interprofessional healthcare team members with the knowledge and tools to identify the indications and contraindications of RMST, facilitating the selection of patients who will benefit from this therapeutic intervention.
