Female genital mutilation, also known as female genital mutilation or cutting (FGM/C), is a deeply ingrained cultural practice that involves the nontherapeutic partial or complete alteration or removal of external female genital organs. Predominantly practiced in parts of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, the procedure is typically performed on young girls. Cultural, religious, or social norms often justify this practice, even though it lacks health benefits and poses severe risks, including urogenital disorders, chronic pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction, infertility, adverse obstetrical outcomes, and mental health challenges. In countries such as the United States, where FGM/C is not the norm, acute complications of FGM/C are rarely seen. Yet, physicians and medical practitioners from any part of the world may encounter women with FGM/C-related sequelae. FGM/C is internationally recognized as a human rights violation, reflecting gender inequality and a disregard for female well-being and autonomy. Global efforts are ongoing to eradicate the practice and support those affected. This educational activity reviews the evaluation, implications, and treatment of patients affected by FGM/C. Participants are equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to provide compassionate care, advocate for patients, and contribute to the global efforts to end FGM/C. This activity also highlights the role of an interprofessional healthcare team in providing culturally sensitive care, effective communication strategies with affected individuals, and collaboration with community and global initiatives aimed at eradicating FGM/C.
