Anophthalmic Socket

Anophthalmic Socket

An anophthalmic socket is the condition of the orbital cavity after removing an eye, a procedure medically termed enucleation or evisceration, depending on the specific surgical method used. Once housing the natural eye, this cavity requires careful management to prepare for the placement of an ocular prosthesis. The health of the anophthalmic socket is paramount, with considerations for preventing infection, ensuring adequate moisture, and maintaining the integrity of the surrounding tissues. Following eye removal, a conformer is often inserted into the socket to help maintain its shape and support the eyelids. Over time, a custom-made ocular prosthesis can be fitted to match the appearance of the natural eye, aiming to restore the individual’s facial symmetry and aesthetic appearance while also providing psychological benefits by improving the individual’s self-image and social interactions. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners’ proficiency in evaluating and managing anophthalmic sockets. Participants broaden their grasp of the assessment, examination, treatment, and fitting of a prosthesis within the eye socket, particularly after an eye has been removed due to disease, injury, or other conditions. Greater competence equips learners to work effectively within an interprofessional team caring for patients with anophthalmic sockets, achieving satisfactory cosmetic results, socket health, and patient comfort.
