The medication is derived from unfractionated heparin to form LMWH and is commonly administered as a subcutaneous injection. Symptoms of overdose necessitate urgent medical attention, with protamine sulfate as an antidote. Routine complete blood counts and stool occult blood tests are recommended during treatment with dalteparin, and patients with renal insufficiency require additional monitoring.
